Why Black? The Meaning Behind the Color at YouMe Midnight Moon
Share
At YouMe Midnight Moon, black has never been just a color. It represents experiences, emotions, challenges, strength, and the parts of our stories that have shaped us. But why black? And why build a brand around a color that is so often associated with darkness? Because maybe the color black deserves to be seen from a different perspective.
What Does the Color Black Represent?
The color can mean different things to different people. It can represent elegance, confidence, strength, seriousness, mystery, grief, or darkness. Its meaning can also change depending on our culture, experiences, and the situation in which we see it. That's part of what makes the color black so interesting to me. We don't all look at it the same way.
At YouMe Midnight Moon, I want to challenge the idea that black has to represent something negative. Instead, I see black as a color that can hold many parts of our experiences, including the ones we don't always talk about.
Black and the Parts of Our Stories We Don't Always See
We all have experiences that have shaped who we are. Some we celebrate. Some challenge us. Some change the way we see ourselves or the world around us. And some take time to understand.
For me, black represents all of those parts of our stories. This is also where the connection between the color black and mental health became important to YouMe Midnight Moon.
Mental health conversations can sometimes focus on the parts of ourselves we would rather hide, the emotions we don't understand, the experiences we haven't talked about, or the moments when we're simply not okay. But those parts of our lives still deserve space.
We don't have to hide the darker parts of our stories to recognize the light that exists within them.
Why Black Pages?
That meaning eventually found its way into the Midnight Moon Journal. Most journals begin with a white page. Ours begins with black.
Writing with white or silver ink creates a contrast that is hard to ignore. Your words become visible against the darkness of the page. And there is something meaningful about that... The black page holds the story. Your words give it a voice.
The black pages aren't meant to tell you how to feel or what to write. They're simply a different space to put your thoughts, experiences, questions, ideas, and whatever else you need to place on the page.
You might write about something you're trying to understand. You might write about something you're grateful for. You might write one sentence. Or maybe one word. There are no rules.
Black Pages, Journaling, and Seeing Things Differently
Journaling gives us an opportunity to put our thoughts into words and look at them from another perspective. Sometimes writing helps us notice something we hadn't recognized before. Other times, there isn't a big realization at all. We simply gave ourselves a few minutes to check in. And that's okay. You don't need to solve something every time you open your journal. You can simply write.
That's one of the reasons black pages became such an important part of YouMe Midnight Moon. They bring together two ideas at the center of the brand: challenging the way we see black and creating space to better understand ourselves.
More Than a Color
YouMe Midnight Moon started with my love for black, but over time, that love became connected to something with more purpose and intention behind it. Black became a way to challenge perspectives. Journaling became a way to encourage reflection and self-awareness. And conversations around mental and emotional well-being became a way to help challenge stigma.
That's what black represents here. Not just darkness. Not just fashion. Not just a color. A reminder that every part of our story has meaning, and that even against a black page, our words can still be seen. Maybe the next time you see black, you'll see something different too.
