Journaling for Busy Souls: How to Reflect When Life Feels Overwhelming

Some days, there is simply a lot going on. Work. Family. Responsibilities. Decisions. Messages waiting for a response. Things you need to remember. Things you haven't had time to think about.

When life feels overwhelming, making time for yourself can easily become one more thing on your list. That's where journaling can help. You don't need a long journaling routine or an hour of free time. Sometimes you just need a few minutes, a page, and somewhere to put what's been taking up space in your mind.

When Your Mind Feels Full

When you have a lot going on, it can be hard to know what needs your attention first. Writing gives you a place to get some of those thoughts out of your head and onto the page. You might write about what you're feeling, what has been bothering you, something you need to remember, or everything that's competing for your attention. You don't have to organize it.

Start with what's taking up the most space in your mind. Sometimes seeing your thoughts in front of you can help you understand what needs your attention, and what can wait.

Make Journaling Work for You

Your journaling practice doesn't need to look like anyone else's.

Keep it simple. Write a few sentences, make a list, use bullet points, draw, or write one word. Your journal doesn't need to look a certain way to be useful to you.

Use the time you have. If you have five minutes, use five minutes. If you only have two, start there.

Write wherever you are. At your desk. In your car before walking into work. At a coffee shop. On your bed before going to sleep. You don't need the perfect setting.

Let yourself stop. You don't have to finish the thought, fill the page, or reach a conclusion every time you journal.

When You Don't Know What to Write

On overwhelming days, even the question “What should I write about?” can feel like another decision.

Start with one question. Choose the question that speaks to you. You don't have to answer all five.

  1. What am I trying to handle all at once?
  2. What feels urgent right now, but actually isn't?
  3. What can I give myself permission not to do today?
  4. Where am I putting unnecessary pressure on myself?
  5. What would help me feel less overwhelmed right now?

A Black Page. Your Words. Your Space.

Against those black pages, your words in white or silver ink stand out. But what you write is completely yours. A thought. A list. A question. A feeling. One word. There are no rules.

Life may still be busy when you close your journal. Your responsibilities may still be there. But for a few minutes, you gave yourself somewhere to put your thoughts and an opportunity to check in with the person who can easily get overlooked when everything else needs something from you: You.

So when life feels like a lot, don't worry about filling the page. Start where you are. And come back when you need it.
